New York-based painter Kenichi Hoshine has a new solo show this weekend titled Amawalk at Oakland’s pt. 2 Gallery. The new paintings continue Hoshine’s efforts to monumentalize the absurd and mundane through obsessive, detail-oriented process. Despite using figurative elements, Hoshine doesn’t sketch or draw in an effort to avoid premeditated narrative. Each piece coalesced spontaneously containing elements of Hoshine’s daily life, from PBS documentaries and alchemical manuscripts to music from his teenage years. However, his work doesn’t directly reference these things, they glide through his mind during his process and may not be expressed at all. In his own words, “ The paintings are like an editing room floor; a surface built upon failures and incidental mark making where a friable foundation forms.”
